Retrograde: A Denver Speakeasy Experience

Speakeasy Bars: A “public-secret” that not everyone knows about!

Speakeasy experiences are popping up all over the place. There is something about the secrecy, code words, hidden doors, and unique cocktails that have a wide appeal. The best speakeasies give you that hidden gem feeling and make you feel like you are stepping into a hidden bar during prohibition.

Retrograde is a speakeasy in uptown Denver and is hidden inside an ice cream shop – not exactly the place you’d expect to find a hidden bar. If you didn’t know what you were looking for, you’d think the door to Retrograde was a door into a walk-in freezer for the ice cream shop.

There’s a light switch by the door that you flip to let the staff know someone wants to enter the bar. Once you’re in, you experience a dark retro styled bar a la prohibition era. You can expect the menu to be dominated by gin and whiskey cocktails in keeping with prohibition liquor (hello, bathtub gin).

I’d highly recommend ordering a bartender’s choice, just be specific about the liquor you like and the flavor profiles you prefer.
