Most people will tell you that a delicious BLT is all about the bacon. That is definitely true but the beauty of a BLT is how well the simplicity of all the ingredients (the sliced tomatoes, the crisp lettuce, the mayo, and bread) all meld together into such a tasty sandwich.
The classic ingredients for a great BLT are: toasted bread, mayonnaise, bacon, lettuce, and tomato. However, there are a number of modifications available for the creative cook. People add everything from additional protein, like turkey or chicken, to fried eggs, to avocado or guacamole. There is even a version of a BLT with fried green tomatoes. You can customize a BLT anyway you want with different variations of the bread, styles of bacon, types of mayonnaise oraioli, varieties of tomatoes, and the different textures of the various types of lettuce/greens.
Below is a recipe for a classic BLT:
Ready In: 15 minutes
Serves: 4
Yield: 4 sandwiches
Ingredients
- ½ lb. bacon (approx. 12 slices)
- 8 slices white bread
- 8 leaves iceberg lettuce, fresh and full
- 8 slices of ripened tomatoes
- 8 tablespoons mayonnaise
Directions
- Cook bacon until crispy, then drain on paper towels.
- Toast the 8 slices of bread.
- Spread 1 tablespoon mayo on each slice of toasted bread. (More or less, to taste).
- Add 1 slice of lettuce to 4 pieces of mayo-spreaded toast.
- Add 2 slices of tomato on top of lettuce.
- Arrange 3 slices of bacon evenly on top of tomato. (Break bacon slices in half to fit, if needed.).
- Add 1 slice of lettuce on top of bacon.
- Put the remaining 4 pieces of mayo-spreaded toast on top to finish the sandwiches.
My favorite variation on a BLT is made with toasted french bread, olive oil aioli, pan-fried bacon, heirloom tomatoes, and arugula. If I feel like adding additional protein or eating a BLT for breakfast, I’ll add a fried egg – it makes for a fresh and flavorful breakfast sandwich.
