La Quinta Inn & Suites San Antonio Riverwalk

La Quinta, which means “the country place” in Spanish, got its start in 1968 during Hemisfair, San Antonio’s world’s fair. Across from the fairgrounds, entrepreneurs Sam Barshop and his brother, Phil, built the first in what would become a successful chain of hotels, the popular La Quinta Inns.

HILTON PALACIO DEL RIO

The Hilton Palacio del Rio is a 500-room, 21-story hotel in downtown San Antonio that opened in 1968. The hotel was constructed for the 1968 World’s Fair (HemisFair ’68) and was designed by Cerna & Garza Architects. The structure is extremely notable because of it’s groundbreaking modular construction techniques.

The hotel was needed for the opening of Hemisfair’68 and traditional construction methods would not have allowed the hotel to be completed the short timeframe available, open by April 6, 1968. Alternative methods were explored. H.B. Zachry Company utilized traditional construction to build the first 4 floors, slip form construction for the services/elevator core of the building and all guest rooms of the hotel were constructed as modular units in a location 8 miles from the construction site. Modular units were built complete with plumbing fixtures, lighting, artwork, furnishings, and even ashtrays. The first 4 floors took 156 days to complete in traditional construction methods, then all pre-fabricated concrete guest rooms were placed (stacked into place) connected to the utilities network and finished in only 46 days. The entire structure was completed in a record 202 working days and the hotel opened five days early on April 1, 1968. Fifty years later the hotel is as busy and safe as it was during the Hemisfair.

TRU – a new type of hotel for a younger generation

tru (Alamo) San Antonio

Say hello to a brand-new hotel experience from Hilton that’s vibrant, affordable and young-at-heart. It’s energetic, yet relaxing and comfortable. It’s familiar, and it’s also unexpected. It’s completely unprecedented, it’s uniquely Tru.(Our room, in June of 2019, was as good in many ways as a 4-star hotel, but at the price of a 1-star hotel. A tru-ly great experience)
