Featured Artist: Jack Atkinson – ARTS&FOOD Gallery Exhibition

Artist Jack A. Atkinson at the British Museum, London – looking like a Summerian.

Jack Atkinson is an artist and designer by night and an art reporter and arts editor by day. Using Sumi brush & ink as a starting point, he often transitions into large-scale works on canvas or paper.  As an editor, he spends major amounts time in museum exhibitions, art galleries, and at international art fairs.

Being in these art environments for thousands of hours, he started noticing other artistic images all around him, which were unrecognized by others: ie – the shadows that sculptures cast when lit with very focused spotlights. He has taken hundreds and hundreds of photos of these shadow images, which he calls his “Museum Shadow Prints.” They have a natural artistic quality along with an interesting abstraction. He never documented the sources (the original sculpture) so most of the shadow images are of unknown origin and Atkinson prefers it that way. Even on the shadows, he does recognize, he leaves the image “Untitled”, and completely up to the viewer’s mind to complete and many times they will name their artwork.
Atkinson says, “I also see interesting faces and unusual objects in these shadows, yet I know these things were not part of the sculpture that made the shadow.”   The direct, focused lighting in museums and galleries makes these shadows very bold and crisp, then again some are soft or broken up by the changing planes as they cascade across the surfaces.
