A Short History of KITES

In China during the Warring States Era, the first kite was created in the Shandong province. Today the city of Weifang, originally part of the territory of the ancient Warring States Era, is known for creating some of the best kites in China and today Weifang hosts one of the largest international kite festivals in the world.

In 1988 Weifang became the Capital City of Kites.

Weifang Kites are often constructed from historical patterns mimicking birds and their landing patterns. These kites were originally made from paper, silk, and bamboo and many are still made that way today.

The Brooklyn Kite Festival Location: Brooklyn Bridge Park|334 Furman Street Brooklyn, NY

The Brooklyn Kite Festival is an annual celebration of the classic, electricity-free amusement of kite-flying that gathers thousands of revelers for a day of outdoor fun. The festival hosts a variety of booths from well-renowned kite makers as well as neat workshops for children where they can make their own personalized kites. Of course, festivalgoers can bring their own kites to fly, as the best part of a kite festival is seeing all the cool kites others bring. In addition to the kite-centric activities, the festival also hosts a variety of tasty snack options from local restaurants and food trucks.
