Easy German Apple Strudel

A traditional Viennese strudel is a popular layered pastry treat associated with many countries that once belonged to the Austro-Hungarian Empire (1867–1918).

 

Ingredients

4 cup (about 3 medium apples, peeled, cored, and cubed

3/4 cups sugar

1/4 cup all-purpose flour

1/2 teaspoon salt

1-1/2 teaspoons cinnamon

10 sheets fillo dough

1/2 cup panko bread crumbs, unseasoned

1 can spray oil or 1/4 cup butter, melted

 

Instructions

1.  Add cubed apples and raisins into a medium bowl. Set aside.

2.  Add sugar, flour, salt, and cinnamon into a small bowl. Whisk.  Sprinkle on top of apples.  Toss with two forks until apples and raisins are coated.

2.  Add fillo dough to flat surface (two at a time, side by side) spray with oil or brush with butter.  Stack fillo dough five layers high spraying or brushing with butter in between each fillo dough layer.

4.  Evernly sprinkle panko crumbs on top of prepare fillo dough…leaving 1-inch from edge of dough.

5.  Add prepared apple to one end of fillo dough.  Start to roll dough, tightly, around apple (folding in the sides of fillo dough) until completely rolled.

6.  Brush with melted butter on top and at the ends.

7.  Bake on 350 degrees F.  for 45-50 minutes or until golden.
