Guajillo’s – Real Mexican Food in a Territory that Was Once a Part of Mexico

How we found Guajillo’s… an authentic Mexican restaurant, patronized mostly by a Spanish speaking clientele.

When we walked in, we thought – “Now this place is the ‘Real Deal!'”

As we left the San Antonio International Airport, my daughter said she was craving Mexican Food. she lives in Connecticut and NYC and for some unknown reason, Mexican food has never taken off on the East coast like it has in the West and the S/W and Central parts of the USA. We were on Highway 281 South and decided to take the frontage road for I-410 West to look for Mexican food or a Tex-Mex restaurant that might cater to the Airport. Things were not very encouraging until we came over a hill and there across the street was Guajillo’s – the shortcut to Mexico. When we pulled in, the parking lot was packed, and we had to park in the auxiliary lot behind the building next door. We hiked up the steep driveway and around to the front door, the place was buzzing with Spanish speaking guests and workers. Wow, we thought, we have hit the jackpot.

We were seated and they gave us the menus. All of the very authentically sounding foods were written first in Spanish/then in English, and the descriptions were in English. My daughter ordered an Aguas Frescas – Horchata, Tamarindo, Jamaica & Piña to drink, and a Chile Relleno – Poblano Peppers stuffed with Oaxaca cheese in a light Tomato Serrano Sauce. My wife ordered iced tea and a Chile Relleno and I ordered a Molé Poblano w/Chicken – in a Rich Sweet and Spicy Sauce made with multiple Chiles, Chocolate, and Peanuts over a Chicken Breast topped with Roasted Sesame Seeds and a coffee. I ordered an Ensalada de Nopalitos / Cactus Salad for the table, to try it out.

The is a restaurant I recommend – if you are craving Mexican food like you would get in Mexico!

When we walked out, we thought – “That was one of the best Mexican food meals of our life!”
