ARTS & FOOD presents a first-person look at what to consider while hosting a 3-day gathering when you want a break from the usual chain-motel-drudgery. A place to go that’s set up for fun and a memorable family reunion! Megan and Damon Black’s family group was made up of 23 people in the final tally, from across the country. They chose to organize it at the beautiful La Costa Resort and Spa located in Carlsbad, California.
Everyone at the event said it was so easy, each individual had different recreational interests and there was something for every single person to do, from tennis, to golf, to swimming, to food, to massage, to drinks/people-watching, to shopping! It was definitely one of the best family reunions ever!* (*Megan said her family has been organizing this annual reunion at various venues, since she was in diapers.)
Any group get-together usually takes most of a year to plan, coordinate, contact all of the individuals involved, often spread far and wide across the United States and abroad then get RSVPs. Also, everyone invited must plan their year, around the event.

Meet Megan and Damon Black. They live in San Diego, but love to take the short drive up to Carlsbad, California for R & R at the Omni La Costa Resort and Spa, when they receive special offers in the resort’s emails. They have two young children and there’s so much available to do on the property, they never need to leave the resort during their stay!
Speaking of the huge resort, if you cannot walk the long distance and you need a ride to an event on the property, the front desk is all-too-happy to set up a golf-cart-lift specifically for you!
TENNIS
Tennis anyone? Reserve your choice of 17 perfectly maintained tennis courts.
And the winning doubles team receives the annual M.B.C. CUP! (M.B.C. was the matriarch of the family.)
GOLF
The golf course at La Costa is awe inspiring… simply beautiful!
Many people come to La Costa specifically for the golf! There are two challenging and interesting courses.
SWIMMING & ENJOYING THE SUNSHINE
In one complex of wonderful rooms and apartment-like lodgings, there are three pools lined up side by side with enough room to offer every guest who wants to swim, a place to swim and enjoy the sun. If one pool is busy, simply move to the next pool over!
There are almost more pools at La Costa than you can count. Here, the children’s water park is where youngsters love to run through the sprinklers, the showers, the fountains and spray each other with water jets!
The family pool is like a theme park with double-barreled water slides!
The adults-only pool has cabana’s, incredible panoramic views of the golf course and surrounding hills, plus hot tubs. Adult beverages and food can be ordered from the roaming wait staff, delivered to your lounge chair and consumed while you take in all of the luxuries.

Yearly there are 263 days of sunny or mostly sunny skies at La Costa Resort and many days with 70 degree weather.
LODGING
Whatever you want in lodging is available. Near a pool, or a room with a view.Family style apartments, with full kitchens, a dining table, a living room, a patio, bedrooms, and baths are available.Patio suites for indoor and outdoor privacy and relaxation can be yours.Resort quality rooms for a good night’s sleep and a quiet place to do some work.Throughout the resort are places to relax outside and read a book, while listening to the soothing gurgle of a fountain.

There’s excellent food available in the multiple restaurants at La Costa, from sandwiches and light fare to one of the best steakhouses in California (Bob’s), all are on-site!

There’s an interesting shopping plaza – for some guests, it’s the highlight of their time at La Costa.
