Few know that the company is owned by Volkswagen through its subsidiary Audi.

Ferruccio Lamborghini, an Italian manufacturing magnate, founded Automobili Ferruccio Lamborghini S.p.A. in 1963 to compete with Ferrari. The company gained wide acclaim in 1966 for the Miura sports coupé, which established rear mid-engine, rear wheel drive as the standard layout for high-performance cars during that era. Lamborghini grew rapidly but sales plunged in the wake of the 1973 worldwide oil crisis. The firm’s ownership changed three times since 1973, including a bankruptcy in 1978. The American Chrysler Corporation took control in 1987 then sold it to Malaysian investment group Mycom Setdco and Indonesian group V’Power Corporation in 1994. In 1998, Mycom Setdco and V’Power sold Lamborghini to the Volkswagen Group where it was placed under the Audi division.

New products and model lines were introduced to the brand’s portfolio and brought to the market and saw an increased productivity for the brand. In the late 2000s, during that financial and economic crisis, Lamborghini’s sales saw a drop of nearly 50 percent. With the boom in entrepreneurship, the Lamborghini has turned into an incentive for youthful founders around the world.

(concept car) The Lamborghini Terzo Millennio: Lamborghini partnered with MIT to explore the future of cars and came up with the theoretical “Terzo Millennio”. The name means, “Third Millenium” in Italian. That’s 982 years from now. This is something more than just a future-tech idea platform. Nonetheless, Lamborghini’s idea car holds several degrees of promise for future technology, some of which — indeed, most of which — might get here well before the year 3000. While Porsche, Ferrari and McLaren all have hybrid electric supercars on the road, Lamborghini is looking beyond to something that technologically address the future of the super sports car in: energy storage systems, innovative materials, propulsion system and visionary design. Lambo is collaborating with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, a collaboration that began one year ago. The first area of research will be energy storage, which you might think will mean batteries. But the partnership is looking at something no one has really been able to make work, an ultracapacitor – which stores electrical energy electrostatically instead of electrochemically. So, just as when you rub your stocking feet on the carpet and then touch something metal, you get a zap, or sudden and total discharge. With a battery, the advantage is that they last a lot longer than batteries without losing their capacity. Use ‘em over and over again and they stay as good as new. (Source: Autoweek.com)
