DESIGN Dept. Brightly Colored Socks / The Rules – When and How to Wear Them

Sock Etiquette

The basic rule of thumb for men’s  colored socks is an easy one: The color of your sock should match the color of your trousers. That means wearing black socks with black trousers, dark gray socks with charcoal trousers, blue socks with your blue jeans, and so on. Yeah, it’s a good rule that keeps most men looking sharp and will always be appropriate for most settings — but for adventurous dressers, it gets dull after a while.

So what about mixing it up?

There’s absolutely a place in men’s style for colorful socks that do not match the trousers. It requires a little more thought, because it’s not a simple, neutral choice, but in the correct situation, it can look great.

You absolutely should not wear colorful socks: (1) at a funeral or any place where showing respect is the primary concern; (2) generally not at a formal business meeting or when you have not met all of the people coming to a meeting; and (3) if you are wearing a uniform, appropriate socks are generally a part of every uniform!

You can wear colorful socks: (1) Most places if you are in a creative field. (2) if you are in a progressive casual start-up company (3) any casual or personal situation where being fun is encouraged. Colorful socks are intended to be fun, and show a lively personality – as a rule of thumb – the more you want your ankles to catch all of the eyes in the room (ie: the less formal the situations), the more appropriate it is to wear wild and crazy socks!
